Mozart &#8212; <em>Missa Brevis in F, K 192<\/em><\/li>\n<li>William Billings &#8212; <em>Creation, Wake Every Breath<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The program featured sacred choral music by three composers- Johan Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and William Billings\u2013with very different world views.<\/p>\n<p>Bach was a devout Lutheran, guided in everything by his fervent belief in the glory of God. The program features one of his cantatas,\u00a0<em>Nun komm, Der Heiden Heiland<\/em>, with a setting by Lutheran hymnist Erdmann Neumeister. Mozart was steeped in the traditions of Catholicism and was commissioned to write music \u201c\u00e0 la mode\u201d to glorify the reputation of his various sponsors. The Chamber Singers will perform one of his many settings of the liturgical Mass, the Missa Brevis in F.\u00a0The American composer Billings was born in the last years of Bach\u2019s life and outlived Mozart.\u00a0Born in Boston, his life there pulled him into the center of revolutionary thought, and his music was sung by heart around campfires and at political meetings up to and during the Revolutionary War. The search for \u201csomething new\u201d led them and their audiences to embrace choral music that was less formal.<\/p>\n<p>This progression is particularly evident in our three offerings of music by Gabriel Faur\u00e9 (1845\u20131924). The celebrated \u201cCantique de Jean Racine\u201d (1865), was one of his earliest works and embodies lush Romantic harmony in a rather conventional form. The setting of \u201cTantum Ergo\u201d (1894), written nearly 30 years later, is more intentionally chromatic, recasting conventional harmonic language. Finally, the\u00a0<em>Messe Basse<\/em>\u00a0(completed 1906) is essentially a Modern work, transforming the melodic and harmonic expression of the words of the Mass into a language far distant from the Cantique of 40 years before.<\/p>\n<p>We will also perform two other settings of the Mass, by Charles Gounod (1818\u20131893) and by the Austrian composer Anton Bruckner (1824\u20131896). These works are less restrictive formally, and stretch the expectations of 19th-century listeners with more deep expression and increasingly chromatic music, moving away from the conventions of Romanticism.<\/p>\n<p>Audiences of today have heard it all: Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Modern, and Contemporary style.
